6 Teen-appropriate Plastic Surgery Procedures

  • Teen-appropriate Plastic Surgery Procedures

The subject of teens and plastic surgery is something of a controversial one. Not all plastic surgery procedures are teen appropriate. For example, saline-filled breast implants are not permitted in women under age 18 and silicone breast implants are not permitted in women under age 22, because the breasts may still be developing. Similarly, Botox and other popular injectables are not permitted for those 18 and under.

Even procedures that are sometimes considered teen appropriate typically involve a more rigorous qualification process that includes a patient interview to ensure the recipient is deemed emotionally mature enough to handle the surgery. This process helps to identify teens with psychological considerations that would preclude cosmetic surgery such as body dysmorphic disorder.

Teen plastic surgery procedures may only make up 2 percent of total cosmetic surgeries performed in the United States (according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons), but these numbers are on the rise as more and more image-conscious teenagers seek treatment.

Here are six plastic surgery procedures that are appropriate for teens in some cases:

  • 1: Rhinoplasty

    Teen-appropriate Procedures

Commonly referred to as nose surgery, rhinoplasty is the most common plastic surgery procedure performed on teenagers. Candidacy requires that the nose is finished developing, which typically occurs between ages 15 and 16 for females and 17 and 18 for males.

  • 2: Otoplasty

    Teen-appropriate Procedures - Otoplasty

Otoplasty is rather unique in the world of plastic surgery in that it is a procedure most typically associated with children (though not exclusively). This ear surgery can be performed on children as young as 5 years old and is used to correct the shape, position or proportion of the ears.

  • 3: Breast Reduction

    Teen-appropriate Procedures - Breast Reduction

The problem of overly large breasts is not uncommon and can affect women in their early to mid-teens as they begin to develop. In addition to the physical back and shoulder pain that overly large breasts can cause a young woman, they may also result in emotional distress brought on by ridicule or unwanted attention. Breast reduction surgery can be performed on women as young as 15 years old.

  • 4: Microdermabrasion

    Teen-appropriate Procedures - Microdermabrasion

Acne is a natural part of puberty and development, but in severe cases it can be unsightly and stress inducing. Microdermabrasion is a popular skin treatment that breaks up dead skin and other imperfections, helping to improve skin irregularities and remove acne scarring.

  • 5: Breast Surgery to Correct Asymmetry

    Teen-appropriate Procedures - Breast Asymmetry

Disproportionate breast shape or size can be corrected with surgery. Like breast reduction, breast asymmetry surgery must be performed after age 15 or once the breasts are fully developed.

  • 6: Gynecomastia

    Teen-appropriate Procedures - Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia or male breast reduction can be performed on young men with excessive breast tissue. Oftentimes, the issue resolves itself at the end of puberty, but when excessive breast tissue persists, corrective surgery can remedy the situation. Doctors typically look for cases in which gynecomastia has been present for at least two years, or particularly severe cases.
