8 Popular Skin Rejuvenation Treatments

  • Procedures and products that promise to firm skin, delete wrinkles and improve skin tone have always been in-demand, and there are more choices today than ever before to help you get your glow on.

Here are eight such skin rejuvenation options to consider

  • 1. Microneedling

Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling involves the use of fine needles to create hundreds of tiny, invisible puncture wounds in the top layer of the skin. These mini punctures stimulate the body’s own natural healing process by boosting collagen supply from the inside out. Collagen — one of the building blocks of healthy, youthful skin — tends to dwindle with age. Once these channels are open, a topical treatment like PRP (platelet rich plasma) or a vitamin-rich serum may be more apt to go where it is needed most — the skin’s lower levels.

  • 2. PRP

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections are one of the hottest tickets in town. It’s still relatively new so all the evidence isn’t yet in, but many swear by PRP’s ability to improve the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles and stretchmarks, as well as even-out skin tone and treat hair loss. It may be combined with other skin rejuvenation procedures such as microneedling or used as a standalone treatment. Unlike off-the-shelf fillers, PRP has the added benefit of being all-natural. The process begins by taking a sample of blood, processing it and separating out the PRP, which is then re-injected back where it is needed most. Several treatments are likely required to achieve desired cosmetic results.

  • 3. Lasers

Laser skin resurfacing is considered the gold standard for skin rejuvenation. Some lasers such as the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser and the erbium laser are ablative, meaning that the energy removes the outer layers of aged or sun-damaged skin. Ablative laser resurfacing does involve its fair share of downtime. By contrast, non-ablative laser treatments target the tissue underneath your skin, stimulating the development of new collagen and requiring less downtime. A series of treatments is likely needed for maximum cosmetic effect.

  • 4. Ultrasound

Ultrasound-based skin rejuvenation employs sound waves to boost collagen stores under the skin’s surface, firming skin. It has its fair share of advocates when it comes to tightening the neck, chin, and brow. Several treatments are needed for optimal aesthetic effect.

  • 5. Cryotherapy

Different than cryolipolysis or CoolSculpting, cryotherapy facials blast ice-cold air on the skin to reduce inflammation and stimulate the development of collagen in the process. It takes just a few minutes and results are immediate.

  • 6. Radiofrequency Energy

Radiofrequency (RF) energy heats the collagen under the skin’s surface, causing it to contract and expand. There are several types of RF-based devices that can help improve skin texture and tone, and most require multiple treatments for optimal effect.

  • 7. Chemical Peels

Chemical peels can remove the damaged outer layers of skin, revealing fresh, healthy layers. Peels come in multiple strengths and can also soften acne scars, age and sun spots, fine lines, and wrinkles. A series of peels is often needed for full-on rejuvenation effects.

  • 8. Skin Care

A personalized skin care regimen is key to maintaining dewy, fresh skin. Sunscreen is the most important part of any regimen. In addition to lowering risk of skin cancer, sunscreen can also halt premature aging (i.e. wrinkles). Choose and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF and reapply it regularly all year long. Ask your dermatologist what products are best for your skin type and concerns.
