7 Super-strange Facts about Breast Implants

  • Year after year, breast augmentation with implants ranks as one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the U.S. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently reported that there were 290,000 breast augmentations performed in 2013, up 1 percent from 2012. Despite their popularity, there are a handful of things that you likely don't know about breast implants, including the fact that they glow in the dark. Here are seven super-strange facts about breast implants.

  • 1: Breast implants Cause Weight Gain

    strange facts - weight gain

The bigger the implants, the greater the weight gain. Don't panic. We're really only talking about a couple of pounds. A 450 cubic centimeter (cc) saline-filled breast implant weighs about 1.3 pounds (not counting the shell's weight of 15 to 25 grams).

Don't believe it? Place flashlights underneath or next to your implants and see for yourself. Saline implants glow even brighter than their silicone-gel-filled counterparts. Pretty cool party trick, no?

  • 3: New Breast Implants Were Nicknamed After Popular Candy

    strange facts - gummy bear

There are now three brands of "gummy bear" breast implants on the market in the U.S. These form-stable breast implants have the consistency of gummy bears. If they are cut in half, none of the silicone gel migrates to other parts of the body, which further eliminates concerns of systemic health problems once associated with silicone breast implants.

  • 4: Breast Implants Can be Inserted through Your Belly Button

    strange facts - TUBA

Doesn't seem possible, but it's true. TUBA stands for transumbilical breast augmentation. During traditional breast augmentation, the surgeon makes incisions in the crease underneath the breast, around the darker skin surrounding the nipple or in the armpit before inserting an implant. By contrast, TUBA involves an incision in the belly button. The saline implants are empty when they are moved into place, and filled afterward. Silicone implants can't be placed through the belly button because they are pre-filled. The main advantage of TUBA? No scars.

  • 5: Breast Implants Have Smart Chips

    strange facts - smart chips

Your implants can be micro-chipped and tracked from outside of your body, just like your pet! New breast implants available outside the U.S. contain VeriTeQ's heat-resistant microchip called "Q Inside." Info such as serial number, manufacturer name, date of manufacture, lot number, volume, size and other data can be quickly and safely identified from outside your body.

  • 6: Breast Implants Go Vegan

    strange facts - go vegan

Once upon a time, breast implants were filled with oil. The hope with Trilucent breast implants was that they would be less likely to obscure a reading on a breast X-ray and be as safe and inert as salt water (saline) if the implants were to rupture. These soy implants didn't live up to the hype, and clinical trials in the U.S. were halted.

  • 7: Breast Implants May be Write-offs

If you are a stripper, cocktail waitress or in the adult entertainment business, that is. The United States Tax Court said it was OK for "Chesty Love" to claim her breast implants as a business expense since bigger was better for her business.
