American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Requirements

The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery certifies surgeons in face, head, and neck procedures, especially procedures such as facelift and rhinoplasty. Requirements for the ABFPRS are as follows.

The surgeon must:

  • Graduate from an accredited medical school
  • Hold a license to practice medicine in the state where residing
  • Complete an ACGME-accredited residency program in otolaryngology or plastic surgery
  • Already be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the American Board of Otolaryngology or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for otolaryngology or plastic surgery
  • Continue in practice for two years
  • Submit and receive approval of 100 operative reports by a panel of board members
  • Successfully pass a comprehensive written and oral examination
