2007 Trend Reports on Cosmetic Plastic Surgery in the United States

Nearly 11.7 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2007, according to the latest statistics compiled by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).
The number of cosmetic surgery procedures has jumped a whopping 457 percent since ASAPS first began gathering these stats in 1997. To create this snapshot of the year in cosmetic surgery, ASAPS sent out more than 12,000 surveys to board-certified plastic surgeons, dermatologists and otolaryngologists.
Cosmetic Surgery: Highlights from 2007
The top nonsurgical procedure was Botox injection.
The top surgical procedure was liposuction.
Americans spent slightly less than $13.2 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2007. About $8.3 billion was spent on surgical cosmetic procedures, with $4.7 billion on nonsurgical procedures.
There was an 8 percent increase in surgical procedures in 2007, compared with 2006.
Men underwent 9 percent of cosmetic procedures in 2007, an increase of 17 percent over 2006.
The top five surgical cosmetic procedures in 2007 were:
- Liposuction
- Breast augmentation
- Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)
- Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
- Breast reduction
The top five nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in 2007 were:
- Botox injection
- Hyaluronic acid injections
- Laser hair removal
- Microdermabrasion
- Intense pulsed light (IPL) laser treatments

Cosmetic Surgery: Sex Matters
Overall, women had 91 percent of cosmetic procedures in 2007. The number of surgical and nonsurgical procedures performed on women was more than 10.6 million, an increase of 1 percent over 2006. Surgical procedures increased by 9 percent in women in 2007, while nonsurgical procedures decreased by less than 1 percent.
But men are jumping on the cosmetic surgery bandwagon in droves. In fact, men had 9 percent of cosmetic procedures in 2007, with the number of total procedures (both surgical and nonsurgical) increasing 17 percent over 2006, to just over 1 million. Surgical procedures increased 5 percent, and nonsurgical procedures increased 21 percent.

Cosmetic Surgery: Age Matters
People aged 35-50 had the most cosmetic procedures in 2007: 5.4 million or 46 percent of the total. The top surgical procedure in this age group? Liposuction. The top nonsurgical procedure? Botox injections.
People aged 51-64 had 25 percent of the cosmetic surgery procedures in 2007. The most popular surgical procedure in this group? Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). The most popular nonsurgical procedure? Botox injections.
People aged 19-34 had 21 percent of the cosmetic surgery procedures in 2007.
Senior citizens aged 65 and older had 6 percent of cosmetic surgery procedures in 2007.
Teens aged 18 or younger had less than 2 percent of the cosmetic surgery procedures in 2007.

Cosmetic Surgery: Location Matters
Curious to know where people had their cosmetic surgery procedures in 2007?
- 54 percent of cosmetic procedures were performed in an office setting
- 17 percent of cosmetic procedures were performed in hospitals
- 29 percent of cosmetic procedures were performed in free-standing surgicenters
Cosmetic Surgery: Race Matters
Traditional racial and ethnic minorities accounted for 22 percent of all cosmetic procedures in 2007. Hispanics had 9 percent of the procedures, followed by African-Americans (6 percent), Asians (5 percent) and other non-Caucasians (2 percent).
