2013 ASPS & ASAPS Statistics: Anything Butt!

Our collective “Keeping up with the Kardashians” may have led to a rise in Brazilian butt lifts.

Last year, nearly 10,000 buttock augmentations with fat injections were performed, up 16 percent from 2012, according to the latest numbers from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). These so-called “Brazilian butt lifts” showed the largest gains of all cosmetic procedures in 2013.

And topline results from another group — the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) — show buttock augmentation increased by 58 percent.

Exactly why these numbers are trending upward is not fully known, but pop icons such as Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Nikki Minaj have certainly helped put bigger butts on the cultural radar. In fact, a recent booty selfie, or "belfie," of Kardashian's backside went viral on Instagram.

Also on the rise according to ASAPS are designer vagina procedures, or labiaplasties, increasing by 44 percent in 2013. The media is likely helping to drive this trend as well. Experts attribute the rise to the mention of these procedures on reality TV shows such as the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. The all-but-bare-down-there trend of Brazilian bikini waxing may play a role too, as the vaginal area is more visible than ever before. Some have even alleged that Internet porn is also increasing demand for labiaplasty.

But one thing is clear: the demand is certainly increasing supply. The number of surgeons who perform labiaplasties increased from 21 percent to 29 percent in the past year, ASAPS reports.
