More About the Surgeons of Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa

Francisco Canales, MD, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Harvard College and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Stanford University. He completed his surgical training and residency in plastic surgery at Stanford University Hospital. While practicing in Boston, Dr. Canales returned to his Alma Mater, serving as a faculty member at Harvard Medical School, where he met his wife and fellow surgeon, Dr. Furnas. Upon relocating to Sonoma County, he served as Chief of Plastic Surgery at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and Chief of Surgery at Sutter Warrack Hospital.

Originally from Puerto Rico, Dr. Canales continues to give back to the communities of Latin America by donating his time, skill and expertise to repair cleft lip and other birth defects in children from Nicaragua, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Argentina. In addition, he represented his homeland in the 1976 Montreal Olympics as a member of Puerto Rico's national swim team.

Highly regarded by his peers, Dr. Canales is a member of several prestigious medical associations, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the California Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Heather Furnas, MD, earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science from Stanford University. After earning her medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) David Geffen School of Medicine, Dr. Furnas returned to Stanford University to complete a six-year residency in plastic surgery. She then received an appointment to the plastic surgery faculty at Harvard Medical School, where she met her husband and fellow surgeon, Dr. Canales. Since moving to Sonoma County, she has served as President of the Sonoma County Medical Association, a delegate to the California Medical Association and a member of the editorial board of Sonoma County's Physician magazine.

Dr. Furnas is deeply committed to volunteering her time, services and expertise to help underprivileged children born with birth defects in developing countries, including Peru, Honduras, Western Samoa, the Philippines and El Salvador.
