On the Up and Up

January is the time to make resolutions about what you will do more or less of in the coming year. Sticking to them, however, is often another story. Instead of setting yourself up to fail, resolve to win by adding these five Goddess Gossip-approved, easy-to-stick-with beauty hacks to your routine.

1. Drink Up
Dewy is the new smooth, and the best way to keep your skin looking shower-radiant is to hydrate from the inside out by drinking at least eight 8-oz glasses of water a day. (This may also help weight loss efforts by making you feel fuller faster.)

2. Sleep Up
Beauty sleep isn't a myth, it's a goal, and the ideal sleeping position is on your back. This way you are not putting all that extra pressure on your skin. Not comfortable for you? Silk or satin sheets can be more forgiving (and romantic) than other linens.

3. Double Up
Choose a sunscreen/moisturizer combo with a sun protection factor of at least 15 and apply it all over every day. This does double duty; protecting your skin from cancer and premature aging as well as keeping it hydrated. It's a win-win.

4. Re-Up Your Retinoid Regimen
Over-the-counter (OTC) retinol and/or prescription Retin-A, used at night, can fight wrinkles and other signs of aging by rebooting your skin's collagen supply. If you are a retinol virgin, start slowly with an OTC product formulated with at least 0.1% retinol. These are less likely to irritate skin, and you can work your way up to stronger regimens.

5. Pucker Up
There is no time like the present to get your lips ready for Valentine's Day. You don't need to be a mixologist to create this super-simple sugar lip scrub. Mix a tablespoon of brown or white sugar with just enough honey or olive oil to make it stick. Rub the scrub on your lips once a week to exfoliate dead skin. Let it sit for one minute, and wipe off with a damp washcloth. Save the extra salve in a small container.

Everyone's jumping on the detox bandwagon these days, but juice cleanses seem kind of scary. To the rescue: Detox recipes that contain real food.

Why do so many health foods include Chia seeds? Are these the same seeds used in Chia Pets?

Chia seeds are what make Chia Pets grow and grow and grow, but they are also an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and fiber. They also contain protein and minerals including iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc. For these reasons, chia seeds are not just as-seen-on-TV fodder anymore. Goddess Gossip suggests sprinkling ground or whole chia seeds on cereal, rice, yogurt or vegetables to see of you like the taste, or grabbing a chia seed energy bar when you need a quick on-the-go pick-me-up.
