Smooth Moves

You live for Spring and Summer. Your hair? Not so much. Those smooth and silky lockes of yours tend to rebel with even the slightest hint of humidity. For many of us frizz is the other F word, and there's nothing we wouldn't do to avoid it.

"It's critical to change things up when seasons change," says Rebecca Kazin, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist at the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery.

Here's what to do:

Go Deep
It may seem somewhat counterinutive, but your hair will frizz even more if it is dry. Choose and use a deep conditioning treatment — if possible, one that contains miracle moisturizer argan oil — to help hair keep its natural moisture. Use as directed.

Run Smoothly
Whether gel, cream or serum, apply hair smoother, when your hair is still wet. Make sure every strand is coated and then style as usual, says Cynthia Fraioli, a New York City-based hair stylist at Lovella salon.

Upgrade your Sleep Sitch
Sleep on a silk pillowcase instead of a cotton one. The oh-so-smooth silk fibers don't pull and tug at your hair, so your style lasts longer and your strands stay as smooth as ... silk.

Cool It
After you blow your hair, do it again using the cool button on your hair dryer, Fraioli says.

Make Your Blow Out Last
No one gets your hair as straight as your stylist, but at $30 a pop or more it can add up fast, especially in the face of humidity. "Skim your hair with a flatiron before you go out to recreate the freshly blown-out look and defrizz," Fraioli says. "Nexxus ProMend Heat Protecting Mist is also good for dry, frizzy hair to protect it from the damage of heat and appliances," Kazin adds.

So many of my friends are gaga about subscription beauty boxes. Are they worth it?

They can be. In general, Glossybox, Birchbox and other subscription beauty boxes arrive monthly and are filled with sample size items curated to your tastes. They tend to cost about $10 a month on average. If you are a skin care maven who likes to try before you buy, subscription beauty boxes can be well worth the investment (plus it's super fun to get a package of treats each month).
